Project Background: Athi River is located 30kms South East of Nairobi and is designated as a major Industrial Growth Centre. The 96Ha first phase of the EPZ site at Athi River was selected from a choice of six main site locations within Mavoko Municipal Council. Environmental Impact considerations as well as Engineering Aspects for these sites were examined and compared. Mitigating measures in the EIA study included conceptualisation of urban growth models, land use planning and provision of low cost housing. These influenced the Engineering design of the EPZ development at the selected site. The on-site and off-site phase I infrastructure development project included the following key components:
