Project Background:

The Independent Water Supply Scheme for the Export Processing Zone (EPZ) at Athi River is necessary to augment and eventually replace the current supply from the Nairobi City Council pipeline source. An intake at the 35m Roller Compacted Concrete dam located at the confluence of the Embakasi and Kapio Rivers transmits 22,000m3/day of water through the Treatment Works and a 5.4 km. long Treated Water Main to the existing 8,500m3 capacity Beacon Ranch Reservoir. From this reservoir water reaches the EPZ and Athi River/Kitengela areas through existing mains. The EIA for this Project includes an assessment on safeguarding the rich wildlife heritage in the nearby Nairobi National Park and the flora and fauna biodiversity. The avian migratory behaviour in the vicinity of the nearby Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport is to be studied. Community liaison and Stakeholder participation are essential in selection of appropriate mitigation measures.
