Project Background: Eldoret Municipality is the fifth largest town in Kenya and its population is currently over 200,000. It is a major commercial, agricultural and industrial centre with a forecasted high growth rate. Moiben Dam has been developed as a new source of water to augment supply to Eldoret town. The dam site is located on Moiben River which is a tributary of the Nzoia River that discharges into Lake Victoria. The catchment is situated within a densely forested area with some human settlements and agricultural activity. The construction of Phase II works was completed in March 1996, while the Moiben Dam was completed in February 1998. The salient features of Moiben dam are:
