Project Background:

Nyeri is the Headquarters of the Central Province of Kenya and is situated about 150 km north of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.  It has been estimated that  by the year 2000, the population within Nyeri Municipality would be 78,000.  The scheme also included design and supervision of construction of a sewerage system for Kiganjo Township, which is located about 20km from Nyeri Town.  Due to the topography and cost of land, the sewage treatment facilities for Nyeri Township were designed as Conventional Biofiltration Works while those at Kiganjo were designed as Waste Stabilization Ponds.  Both the treatment works, at Nyeri and Kiganjo, including sewerage networks have been constructed and are in operation.

The Nyeri Works include the following:

22km of trunk and branch sewers.

Treatment works consisting of bar screens, constant velocity grit channels, primary sedimentation tanks, high rate biological filter, intermediate settling tanks, low rate filters, final settling tanks, maturation ponds, sludge thickening tanks, sludge digestion lagoons and sludge drying beds (Capacity 4,800m3/d.)

18 No. staff houses and ancillary works.

Administration offices and workshop.

The Kiganjo Works include the following:

12km of trunk and branch sewers.

Treatment works consisting of pumping station and waste stabilization lagoons (Primary, Secondary and Maturation).

13 No. staff houses and ancillary works.

The scheme was completed and handed over to the Client in 1988.
