Project Details

Firm’s Responsibility:

Land acquisition and compensation for multipurpose Sondu/Miriu Hydropower Project.  Following works for Resettlement Programme: Cadastral survey, supervision of resettlement planning and implementation, design, tendering and construction supervision of three school complexes, a church, staff housing and ancillary works.  Project monitoring and evaluation of the resettlement process.  These works (overall land acquisition and resettlement of affected population) precede the implementation of the main project described below.

Project Background:

The Sondu/Miriu Hydropower Project is to be constructed as the first phase of the overall multipurpose development of the Sondu River Basin.  The Project is located 30km South East of Kisumu Town, the third largest urban centre in Kenya.  The Project entails transferring water from Sondu River to the Kano Plains through a headrace tunnel, penstock and power station  Until the implementation of the Irrigation Project of Kano Plains, the water discharged from the power station will be returned to the Sondu River through an outlet channel.  The installed capacity of the power house is 60MW.  The power generated will be transmitted by a 132kV transmission line to the existing Kisumu electrical power sub-station and integrated into the national grid system.

The first contract involving the relocation of existing structures within the inundated zone includes the construction of the following:

Thurdibuoro Secondary Boarding School: Classrooms, Administration, Library, Canteen/ Watchman, Latrines, Laboratory, Kitchen, Dining/ Multipurpose Hall, Dormitories & Ablution Blocks, Staff Houses.

Apondo Kasaye Primary Day School: Classrooms, Administration, Library, Canteen/Watchman, Latrines, Nursery, Home Science, Workshop, Staff Housing.

Aomo Primary Day School: (as above).

Church & Chapels.

Ancillary buildings and civil infrastructure works.
