Project Background: The Sondu/Miriu Hydropower Project is to be constructed as the first phase of the overall multipurpose development of the Sondu River Basin. The Project is located 30km South East of Kisumu Town, the third largest urban centre in Kenya. The Project entails transferring water from Sondu River to the Kano Plains through a headrace tunnel, penstock and power station Until the implementation of the Irrigation Project of Kano Plains, the water discharged from the power station will be returned to the Sondu River through an outlet channel. The installed capacity of the power house is 60MW. The power generated will be transmitted by a 132kV transmission line to the existing Kisumu electrical power sub-station and integrated into the national grid system.
