Client: Period of Assignment: Ministry of Local Government on behalf of Municipal Council of Thika 1997

Financed by: African Development Bank Man-months: 15

Firm’s Responsibility:

Initial Environmental Impact Assessment within the framework of the Sewerage Master Plan Study.  Ensure that current and future sewerage and sanitation options selected do not have adverse environmental impact and are sustainable.  Assess and identify effects on downstream users after implementation of proposed project.  Propose necessary mitigation measures to counteract likely adverse impacts.  The African Development Bank guidelines have been followed in this study.

Project Background:

Thika Municipality is the seventh largest town in Kenya and one of the country’s major industrial centres.  It has a densely populated agricultural hinterland and a high level of urban in-migration.  The rate of population growth has been about 7% per annum which has strained the town’s infrastructure and in particular the water supply and sanitation facilities.  The water supply system has been upgraded to cater for the Municipal’s needs to the year 2005.

The Sewerage Master Plan proposes the following salient improvements:

Extensive Rehabilitation, Renewal and Extension of the Town’s sewer network.

Rehabilitation and Augmentation of the existing waste stabilisation ponds.

Construction of new Nanga Sewage Treatment Works: capacity, 40,750m3/day.

Ancillary infrastructure and building works.

Recommendations for pre-treating current and future industrial effluent. Proposals for operation and maintenance of the proposed system.
