These popular neighbourhoods provide shelter to over 300,000 people.  There are similar schemes throughout Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Dam Engineering

MIBP In conjunction with services for water supply development, MIBP has carried out design and construction supervision of concrete and embankment dams upto 50m high.  All aspects of the dam engineering process such as flood hydrology, flood routing, reservoir modelling, geotechnical investigations, model tests for spillway structures and numerical analysis are catered for.

Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment

Master planning, design and construction supervision for sanitation services has been carried out for townships with populations ranging from 500,000.

The towns of Thika, Eldoret, Nakuru, Machakos, Nyeri, Kiganjo and Karatina amongst many others in Kenya all benefit from MIBP designed sewerage and sewage treatment works

This expertise has been extensively used to provide effective environmental protection advice to industries. Treatment plants have also been designed and built for leather tanneries and Breweries with state-of-the-art processes being incorporated.

Water and Sanitation Services Management

In order to ensure the reliable delivery of water supplies and sanitation MIBP has prepared and implemented institutional strengthening initiatives within Local Authorities and water utility undertakers.

Roads and Traffic Management

MIBP has carried out planning, design and construction supervision of roads varying from heavily trafficked highways requiring the latest pavement designs to gravel rural access roads built using appropriate technology.

MIBP has experience with management of road maintenance organizations, establishment of management systems, assistance in procurement of appropriate plant, equipment and materials.

Environmental Science and Engineering

With a growing global awareness of the need to have projects that are environmentally sound, the Firm has amassed considerable expertise in conducting Environmental Impact Assessments.  Studies of land use, demographics, terrestrial ecology, limnology, ornithology, environmental monitoring plans, social impacts and mitigating proposals, for Water Supply, Roads, Sewerage, Solid Waste and Industrial Projects have been completed.  These studies have been conducted in accordance with major donor agency guidelines and policies, such as the World Bank and African Development Bank.  Of note are the Environmental Impact Assessments that have contributed to the successful financing and completion of projects such as the Export Processing Zone at Athi River, Moiben Dam, various Leather Tanneries and Industries as well as major Sewerage Projects serving upto 500,000 people.

Definition of water quality guidelines for receiving waters are undertaken.  As an example MIBP has carried out an in-depth scientific data review of Lake Nakuru, a high altitude alkaline lake situated on the floor of the Great Rift Valley in central Kenya.  The lake is a unique ecosystem home to one third of the world’s flamingo population.  It is a protected wetland under the UN “Ramsar” convention.  Water discharge guidelines for the sustainability of the lake’s ecology have been identified for a combined water and sanitation project serving adjacent urban populations.

The Partnership maintains relationships with environmental pressure groups to ensure that mitigating measures find acceptance and are viable and sustainable.  Studies have been conducted with the participation of IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), WWF (World Wildlife Fund), the NYZS (New York Zoological Society), National Environmental Secretariat, Water Pollution Control Department of the Ministry of Water Resources, Kenya Wildlife Services and HABITAT.

Town Planning

The Firm has dealt with a number of projects relating to Town Planning.  The World Bank funded Athi River Export Processing Zones, Dandora Development Project and Kayole Urban Development Project are examples.

These projects covered comprehensive planning of areas to house populations of nearly 300,000 people.

Physical planning inputs for transport, water supply and sanitation are also undertaken.

Electrical and Mechanical Engineering

The Partnership has undertaken the design of electrical systems for residential, industrial and commercial developments, pumping stations, water works, sewage works, HV and LV power distribution systems, street lighting and construction supervision of electrical works.

Institutional, Financial, Social and Economic Studies

To obtain funding for major development projects, comprehensive institutional, financial, social and economic studies are conducted.  MIBP maintains access to a pool of experts in various areas of specialization in this field.

Survey Work, Land Acquisition and Re-Settlement

Land acquisition and preparation of documentation to enable construction of project facilities has been executed for all the large scale engineering projects that have been supervised by the firm.

In order to deliver projects that are functional and are accepted by the community, MIBP has carried out liaison with land owners and prepared documents for gazettement and registration with the Commissioner of Lands.

Projects for which this exercise has been carried out include the Greater Nakuru Eastern Division Water Supply Project, Second Mombasa and Coastal Water Supply Project, the Eldoret Water Supply Project, the Export Processing Zone at Athi River and Mombasa.  It has assisted authorities in identifying suitable re-settlement schemes and liaised with land owners and valuers to agree on appropriate land compensation.

Geospatial Analysis and Systems Integration

on the wealth of experience that MIBP has built up over the years conducting geospatial analysis for hydrological modelling, land use planning, demographic analysis, water distribution, leakage management, waste water collection and highway design, it has successfully shifted these tasks to function using the latest advances in computer technology.

MIBP has developed software tools to support applications of geospatial analysis to aid design and manage water and sanitation utilities, transportation authorities, electricity and telecommunications companies.  The latest application development tools and a pool of skilled programmers are maintained to develop and enhance software and computer system configurations.

A computerized Geographical Information System (GIS) has been developed that uses digitized mapping and data collected by customer surveys to prepare monthly bills, archive cadastral records, provide management, financial and accounting data.  Exploiting up-to date data collected by meter readers and operators, the system produces accurate and timely reports.  It functions on a low cost PC-based operating platform with user friendly menus developed by the Firm.  It is a powerful tool enabling greater customer care, more effective management and improved accountability.
